Live shows in Ithaca — your best bets

Good morning everyone! Your esteemed editor is taking off for the sunny skies of California for a little r&r, so this will be the last post for a while. Although, if I get my act together, I plan on posting my top 10 live gigs of the year AND my top 10 records of year (although the list of the latter is going to be really difficult!). Here’s a quick rundown of some of the best live gigs around Ithaca for the next month or so, and I’ll see you all when I get back! From this week’s Encore:

The year is almost over, but there is still an abundance of live music events to check out before New Year’s Eve takes hold. Let us take you through December (and bits of January — might as well avoid the winter doldrums entirely), with our best bets for live music in Ithaca.

Eminent cellist Hank Roberts has just finished up his excellent residency at the Lost Dog Lounge (this past Tuesday was the last gig for the month), and he was joined by a veritable who’s-who of Ithaca’s finest jazz and rock musicians, including Matt SaccucciMorano, Michael Stark, Willie B, Brian Dozoretz, and out-of-towners Adam Matta and Bill King.

If you missed Roberts’ Lost Dog gigs, you can still catch him all over town in the next couple of months, including a show with Wingnut on Saturday, Dec. 29 at the Chapter House. That show will start at 10pm. Roberts will collaborate with Wingnut and Adam Matta again at Castaways on Thursday, Jan. 24. The show begins at 9pm.

Speaking of Wingnut, pianist Michael Stark is one of Ithaca’s busiest (and best) musicians. We’ve seen him play adeptly in a wide range of musical styles, including jazz, rock, reggae, pop and funk, and the next couple of months will find him (and his various bandmates) in an intense flurry of activity. This Saturday, Dec. 22, reggae group J-san & the Analogue Sons (that’s them in the photo above) will take the Chapter House stage at 10pm.

On Friday, Dec. 28, the alt-country weirdos of the Johnny Dowd Band (that would be Stark, Johnny Dowd, Willie B, and Kim Sherwood-Caso) will play the Lost Dog Lounge for an early show at 8pm. The night will also feature an appearance from local improv collective Orbiting Art Ensemble, as well as prog-jazz group Tzar.

Also at the Lost Dog Lounge is the Burns Sisters’ 23rd Annual Holiday Show, held this year on Sunday, Dec. 23. The show begins at 3pm, and will feature the Burns Sisters’ backing band, Kevin Maul, Tony Markellis, and Larry Clyman. Tickets are available at Ithaca Guitarworks for $10 (it’s $12 at the door).

Country singer-songwriter BJ O’Malley (aka “Cleveland’s Best Lovelorn Country Gal”) will present “a brokedown, lovesick holiday party” at Castaways this Thursday, Dec. 20 (read more about O’Malley in Luke’s story on pg. 25), with Hubcap frontman Steve Gollnick opening up with a solo set. The show (and whiskey drinking) begins at 8pm.

The Splendors’ frontman Jairo Van Lunteren will present a solo acoustic show at Felicia’s this Sunday, Dec. 23. The Dutchman played a solo set recently (last Sunday’s Love Knows No Bounds Benefit at the Haunt) and partied hard at his CD release party for The Splendors’ Melt last week, so pared-down versions of his alternative rock songs should be a pleasure to hear. The free show begins at 7pm. For more info, visit www.myspace.com/jairovanlunteren.

Over at ABC Café, acoustic anti-folk collective Dufus will play at 10pm on Friday, Dec. 21. Headed up by Seth Faergolzia and followed by a constantly changing lineup, the group has featured as many as 20 performers and as few as two - but the smaller group, fresh off of a five-week European tour, is the lineup that will be playing this weekend. The eclectic group has opened for acts like Ween, Animal Collective and the Moldy Peaches. For more info, visit www.dufus.tv.

And in the not-so-distant future is another exciting show coming from the good folks over at Rootabaga Boogie Productions. They consistently book unusual shows (some of our favorite live gigs of the year included the comical Eugene Chadbourne/Jimmy Carl Black gig at the Chapter House and the hypnotic, avant-blues of The Pines at the Rongo last month), and we have another to look forward to this coming year. On Thursday, Jan. 10 the folk and blues musician “Spider” John Koener will play at Castaways. Local old-time group the Chicken Chokers will join them for the second set. The show begins at 8pm. For more info, contact Tracey Craig at rootabagaboogie@lightlink.com.

We know it seems like ages away, but we just heard that the fusion jazz trio Medeski Martin & Wood (or MMW) will take the State Theatre stage on Thursday, Feb. 28. Tickets go on sale this Friday for $28.50 for reserved seating. Hop to it, people! For more info and tickets, visit www.stateofithaca.com.

We believe that greater protection of personal privacy on the Web will not only protect consumers, but also increase consumer confidence and ultimately their participation in online activities. We intend to give you as much control as possible over your personal information.

The purpose of our policy is to inform you about the types of information we gather about you when you visit our site(s), how we may use that information, whether we disclose it to anyone, and the choices you have regarding our use of, and your ability to correct, the information.

How we gather information from users

How we collect and store information depends on the page you are visiting, the activities in which you elect to participate and the services provided. You can visit many pages on our site without providing any information. Other pages may prompt you to provide information, such as when you register for access to portions of our site, sign up for membership, request certain features (e.g., newsletters, news updates and other products) or make a purchase. You may also provide information when you participate in sweepstakes and contests, voting and polling activities, photo galleries, message boards and other interactive areas of our site.

Like most Web sites, the service also collects information automatically and through the use of electronic tools that may be transparent to our visitors. What we do with the information we collect

We will use your information only as permitted by law. Aggregated Information (information that does not personally identify you) may be used in many ways. As one example, we may combine information about your usage patterns with similar information obtained from other users to learn which pages are visited most or what features are most attractive. We also collect information to enhance your visit and deliver more individualized content and advertising.

We may use Personally Identifiable Information collected on the Service to communicate with you regarding something you have posted, our Terms of Service and privacy policy, products and services offered by the service and other Newski inc. affiliates and partners, administration of sweepstakes and contests, processing e-commerce transactions and other topics we think you might find of interest. We reserve the right to share this information with other Newski Inc. business units and affiliates, including for example our affiliated newspapers

As we continue to develop our business, we may sell, buy, merge or partner with other companies or businesses. In such transactions, user information may be among the transferred assets. We may also disclose your information in response to a court order, at other times when we believe we are reasonably required to do so by law, in connection with the collection of amounts you may owe to us, and/or whenever we deem it appropriate or necessary to give such information to law enforcement authorities. Please note we may not provide you with notice prior to disclosure in such cases.

Affiliated sites, linked sites and advertisements

The service expects its partners, advertisers and third-party affiliates to respect the privacy of our users. However, third parties, including our partners, advertisers, affiliates and other content providers accessible through our site, may have their own privacy and data collection policies and practices. For example, during your visit to our site you may link to, or view as part of a frame on a The service page, certain content that is actually created or hosted by a third party. Also, through The service you may be introduced to, or be able to access, information, Web sites, advertisements, features, contests or sweepstakes offered by other parties. The Service is not responsible for the actions or policies of such third parties. You should check the applicable privacy policies of those third parties when providing information on a feature or page operated by a third party.

While on our site, our advertisers, promotional partners or other third parties may use cookies or other technology to attempt to identify some of your preferences or retrieve information about you.
