Death by Audio: Three shows, one weekend

Music venue Death by Audio is located in Williamsburg (near Glasslands), and we often find out about their shows through the Todd P emails we get. Unfortunately, it’s one of the Brooklyn venues that we haven’t been to yet. But judging by the looks of this weekend’s lineup, we’ll have to rectify the situation immediately. (We were planning on going to Brooklyn this weekend, but are now staying in town for the Stone Baby show tonight at No Radio — more info on that in a moment.)
This weekend at Death By Audio three great lineups, and we are really impressed at the variety of the music presented. For example, tonight will feature the fun, electro-pop trio Enon, with Lemonade, Frightened Rabbit, and Stay High opening.
Saturday night will be a very different show — one curated by Carlos Giffoni of No Fun Fest. The show, titled “Sexual Onslaught,” will feature the immense talents of Ramleh, Wolf Eyes, Putrefier, Carlos Giffoni + Prurient, and Thurston Moore. These shows are usually a ball. The last of these types of shows we attended was Winter Ends Destruction, which was exhausting and great. Well, Sexual Onslaught was originally booked to be at The Hook (a great space where Carlos held this year’s No Fun Fest), but it was moved to Death by Audio after reports that the Hook is no longer functioning. (Read the whole thread at IHM.) Sad news indeed — we had a truly amazing time at No Fun Fest, and we hope Carlos finds an appropriate venue adjustment for next year.
And finally, Sunday night will feature the immensely talented sound artist and electronic musician Jessica Rylan, aka Can’t, who I think is one of the foremost female avant/noise musicians of the past 10 years. We first heard of her after Cornell’s Sunburned Hand of the Man show, when Taylor told us that Jessica had built some of his gear (they’re both based in the Boston area). We were immediately curious. She owns and operates Flower Electronics, where she hand builds modular synthesizers and other analog electronic instruments. Rylan also owns the cassette imprint Friendship Bracelet. To continue her list of achievements, from 2005-2006 Rylan served as a Research Affiliate at MIT, at the Center for Advanced Visual Studies. (On Nov. 14, at MIT, Rylan will give a talk about “the history of microelectronics, the aesthetics of mass production, and the implications of chaos theory.”) We could go on and on.
People tell us she’s absolutely breathtaking live — and we definitely trust this guy’s opinion — and we love everything we’ve ever heard from her. Very controlled and restrained — and quite beautiful as a result. Rylan is at the forefront of predominantly male genres, whether it be noise, power electronics, or electroacoustic musics, and she transcends characterizations of simply “feminizing noise.” For an introduction, her myspace and mp3 page are good places to start. You can order records from Ultra Eczema, Important Records, RRRecords, and Load. We hope someday to catch her live.
A very good introduction to Rylan’s methology is this interview with Infinite Thought, in which she is dubbed “the future of noise.” It appeared in k-punk’s blog in 2005. It’s very interesting to read it now, in 2007, especially with respect to her comments about the proliferation of noise scenes in the northeast, and the nearly ubiquitous nature of names like Wolf Eyes and Merzbow. She’s extremely articulate, and it’s worth the read.
As for the show on Sunday, Twodeadsluts Onegoodfuck, Suffering Bastard, Gowns, Naomi, and Earth Crown are all slated to play as well.
