NO FUN 2007: Thursday’s Lineup
Published by Natasha May 17th, 2007 in Music.

Here at Popcorn Youth, we’re going crazy with anticipation about this year’s No Fun Fest. We’ve never been before, but heard crazy stories about it. (And you can read more at IHM) We also went to this winter’s Winter Ends Destruction, which was basically a precursor/teaser to the official No Fun Fest, and that was completely insane. But if you look at the 4-day lineup for this weekend’s No Fun Fest, it can be extremely overwhelming. Here’s a quick breakdown of Thursday’s lineup (for starters):
From Crucial Blast: Pain Jerk, a.k.a. Kohei Gomi, has been one of Japan’s most lethal figures in the harsh noise underground throughout the 1990s. A hyperspeed collage of spastic feedback, detailed distortion, and seizure inducing rhythms that feels like you’ve stuck your head inside of a cement mixer filled with scrap metal and malfunctioning stereo receivers. Absolutely essential for all acolytes of the Japanese noise movement and fans of fellow psychedelic junk-destruction units Incapacitants, Monde Bruits, and Merzbow.

Hair Police: American noise band based out of Lexington, Kentucky, that have released records through labels such as Troubleman Unlimited, Hanson Records, Gods of Tundra, Freedom From, and Hospital Productions. They have also released a split record on Load Records with Viki. Another huge act — Hair Police was one of the inaugural bands for the very first No Fun event. Read more about them on Volcanic Tongue. P4K reviews here, here and here.

Yoshimi and Kim Gordon: This clearly needs no explanation. Yoshimi from the Boredoms and Kim from Sonic Youth. A personal highlight of the weekend for me. Lots of photos of Kim Gordon because I can do whatever I want.

Hive Mind+Damion Romero: Romero also goes by Power Acoustics.
And this is what Michael Bernstein (of Double Leopards/Religious Knives/Heavy Tapes) had to say about Hive Mind:
Hive Mind is a brutal patch of analog smog hovering over the already bleak landscape of Detroit, Michigan. A constantly throbbing, full frequency signal transmitter which is only limited by the physical restraints of time and the artificial constructs of society, Hive Mind has both blessed and cursed us with dozens of musical communications in almost every imaginable format. Pushing the limits of analog media and revealing the coldness inherent in the digital, the most striking aspects of these releases is how they are so easily conceivable as infinite: the slow movement of the tectonic plates, the threat of a horrible tsunami, and the utter depression of an endless stream of sinister colored sunsets … this is Hive Mind.
And this is what Aaron Dilloway (of Wolf Eyes) had to say about Damion Romero’s release “Missing Link”:
30 minutes of Burl from the mysterious boxes. Heavy thick piles of drone upon drone of heavy electronic buzz, creating an intense wall of multi-layered sound attack. INTENSITY. (Read more on Volcanic Tongue)
Lambsbread: From Volcanic Tongue: Ohio-based rock trio (Zac Davis and Kathy O’Dell - guitars, Shane Mackenzie - drums) who seem capable of the most fucked underground noise/free/rock currents of the past coupla decades into intense, brutally truncated guitar/drums formulations that feel as free and focused as anything from heavyweight punk/psych avatars like Harry Pussy, Blue Humans et al.
Evil Moisture, aka Andy Bolus. Sound is suitably disgusting noise mong with blasts of automaton crud and a particularly queasy aspect that’s all his own (Volcanic Tongue).
Orphan Fairytale: Drawing from the droopy-lids school of minimalism, Orphan Fairytale unwinds long threads of tone that slowly shift, overlap, and twine into a thick, comfy fabric. Both soothing and unnerving, Orphan Fairytale evokes the original Grimm tales, where childish whimsy met murder, starvation, and cannibalism. Like those stories, the union of seeming opposites is surprisingly harmonious, and ultimately more unsettling than a slasher flick. (From Stylus)
DJs:
Tony Rettman: Writer for Blastitude. Self-professed dubstep fan(!) and blogger at 200LBU. What he will play I cannot say.
Mike Simonetti: Best known for being owner of Troubleman Unlimited, but he also DJs with guys like Carl Craig and Tim Sweeney of DFA, and, um, maintains a blog titled “Italians Do It Better” (vivaitalians.blogspot.com).
Ok. That took forever. Expect a more truncated version of the last three days, cuz that took way too long.

We believe that greater protection of personal privacy on the Web will not only protect consumers, but also increase consumer confidence and ultimately their participation in online activities. We intend to give you as much control as possible over your personal information.

We may also disclose your information in response to a court order, at other times when we believe we are reasonably required to do so by law, in connection with the collection of amounts you may owe to us, and/or whenever we deem it appropriate or necessary to give such information to law enforcement authorities. Please note we may not provide you with notice prior to disclosure in such cases.
