Interview with Teresa Ralli of the Yuyachkani Group

The Kitchen Counter Culture Series comes to a close in April with a rare treat. Peruvian actress Teresa Ralli, a founding member of Peru’s famed Yuyachkani theater collective, will be performing Antígona — a one-woman play adapted by poet Jose Watanabe from Sophocles’ classic Greek tragedy, “Antigone.”

“Yuyachkani” is a Quechua word that means “I am thinking, I am remembering.” The Theatre group was awarded Peru’s national honors for Human Rights in 1999 and worked with Peru’s truth commission investigating crimes against humanity committed during the 1980s and early 1990s.

The Kitchen Theatre is collaborating with Cornell University on a series of events, including a formal presentation on April 12 by Teresa Ralli and Yuyachkani director Miguel Rubio on activist theater with video footage of Yuyachkani’s work in the community. A two-day actors’ workshop will be held on April 13 and 14 with Ralli and Rubio, and there will be three public performances at the Kitchen Theatre from April 16 to 18.

All Counter Culture productions feature a “talk back” session when the audience can interact with the actor, asking questions about their performance. Debra Costillo and one of her students will be there to facilitate and translate. Since this production has cross-cultural appeal, the Kitchen Theatre expects that the “talk back” sessions for this play will be multi-lingual, and that the exchange of perspectives and ideas is potentially as interesting as the play.
