I’ve checked all my facts and I’ve got all the proof I need.
I keep forgetting why I’m here, I keep feeling I shouldn’t be.
The looks I keep getting, the talk in my ear keeps reminding me.
It reminds me how our friendship died, how my presence here is a thorn in your side.

it’s because I’m a petty guy who spends his time fabricating useless lies.
I wanna know why you had to say the things you said,
the time you spent inside my head. I don’t mind.
The truth is somewhere in between, hurting you and killing me.
You are resigned with your shoulders shrugged, a sideways glance, a nodded head, a non-response.

-Double Negative

There are few things better than the infinitely dark, angry, and reclusive nature of The Jim Yoshii Pile-Up, especially on their 2002 record Homemade Drugs. The music is so unrelently dark, yet the occasional flashes of dissonance startle the overall mood of depression and ennui into something musically fantastic; the post-rock guitars and huge, crashing drums are just as virtuostic as the unbearably well-crafted lyrics, creating a razor-sharp microcosm of loneliness, regret, anxiety, and the burden of memory. This is music for a cold, chilly, grey autumn night, so beware: the record will suck you into to its inky black nothingness. The 1-2 punch of “A Deep Deep Lake” and “Double Negative” is powerful, painful stuff. Particularly excellent is singer Paul Gonzenbach’s full, rich tenor (he has a similar emotional range to Travis Morrison, imho) and his unusual flow and pacing, often spilling over into the next phrase with startling enjambment, straddling the line between resignment and painful yearning.
